L1 TRAINING

Training is facilitated by Paul Cumming of Western Bay Wildlife Trust.

Most monitoring activities are done late at night during Oct-Jan between 9pm and midnight.

MAHI

Involves late night visits to the burrows along the north-facing trap lines, checking in on the oi and their chicks.

The track is rugged, requiring agility and balance. Monitors will provide regular surveillance of burrows and reporting, recording basic information about bird welfare.

Monitors are seeking to band chicks, and report on chick health and maturity.

Reporting is recorded manually using a chart provided and regulated by Paul.

Banding mahi is to be recorded and reported to the NZNBBS by Paul.
