Dotterel and Oyster Catcher Monitoring

CHECKLIST - DAY

LOCATION

Meeting point - Usually done solo

Monitoring sites - Main beach between Mauao and Mussel Rock

TRAINING

Training is facilitated by Anna Wentsch of Western Bay Wildlife Trust.

Monitoring activities are done in the day when available.

MAHI

Involves scouting the beach for dotterels, oyster catchers and their chicks. 

WBWT will erect a fenceline around establishing nests to prevent human disturbance. Monitors will provide daily surveillance and recording basic information on bird welfare.

Monitors report on bird presence and location, if there are any eggs or chicks, their behaviours and activity at the time of monitoring.

Reporting is achieved through a messenger chat group, facilitated by Anna.

  • Human disturbance including daily beach use, large community and sporting events, Guy Fawkes and New Years.
